Integrating EMR software and medical devices is still an area of healthcare IT with a lot of weaknesses. There are not yet industry standards and finding the best infrastructure can be overwhelming. HIMSS Analytics released a paper in December 2010 stating that only a third of hospitals they surveyed reported having active interfaces between their EMRs and medical devices. It can be an obstacle course for healthcare organizations trying to make sure each medical device is compatible with their EMR.

However, healthcare providers must pay attention to EMR and medical device connectivity. One of the core measures of Meaningful Use Stage 1 is the ability to interface vital sign monitors with EMRs. As of now, many organizations are transcribing vital signs first and then entering them into the EMR. This is not a paradigm of efficiency or accuracy.

When researching EMRs and medical devices, it is important to choose the medical device based on its quality and fit with your organization initially. Then talk to the EMR vendor about connectivity with the EMR software. EMR vendors should offer demos of the medical device/EMR interface capabilities and be able to recommend the best option for your organization.
