When making EMR selections, medical providers are faced with a variety of tough decisions.  Implementing an EMR is an extremely expensive process and it is important to weigh all options. .There are many factors to consider that  EMR vendors might gloss over. These costs include setup cost, monthly fee, training time for employees, IT support and maintenance, as well as the wealth of additional hardware that may be required to make the system run. Financing options for EMRs include purchasing, bank loans or leasing. It’s a good idea to talk to a knowledgeable healthcare IT consultant about these options when you begin your EMR search.

The complexity of the decision is only increased when considering potential incentives or fines imposed by the HITECH Act.  Physicians can receive pretty hefty cash back for meaningfully using a certified EMR. Although this does not help with the initial implementation costs, it can drastically help the return on investment over time. Providers should make sure they choose an EMR vendor with a certified product  who can also help them through the reimbursement process. MMRGlobal, the owner of www.mymedicalrecords.com announced today that they entered into an agreement with UST Global to offer their product to UST Global’s clients and partners, while also providing an electronic personal health record to all 1500 of UST’s employees. Additionally, the partnership will include a pre-paid personal health record card for retail sale at pharmacies and other commercial settings. This is just one example of the evolving “patient as consumer” market in healthcare IT. Not too many patients use electronic personal health records currently, unless they have extreme health conditions or are very technologically savvy (probably both at this point). Right now, patients have to go out of their way to set up a PHR and most people don’t care enough. However, when pre-paid PHR cards start popping up in pharmacies and physician’s offices, people will undoubtedly purchase them. Eventually uniting EMRs with personal health records or patient portal information will be a must for physicians. Many EMR vendors already have patient portal systems but many are not particularly user friendly. The patient side of the EMR business will certainly become increasingly important part of the industry.

While the job market in the U.S. is looking quite grim, one industry offering a glimmer of hope is healthcare. With Meaningful Use requirements looming above their heads, healthcare providers of all sizes are transitioning in their healthcare IT practices.  This has already made the healthcare job industry surge and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects strong healthcare employment growth in the future as well. HITECH Act Stimulus Requirements will force healthcare providers to spend more money in this sector and once the infrastructure is in place, the healthcare IT sector should only grow.

For the first time, we may begin to see a knowledge of technology play a critical role in HR’s hiring practices for upper-level  healthcare administration.  As technology is increasingly integrated into the healthcare system, administrators must  have a grasp on at least the basic technological aspects of EMR software to be able to efficiently perform managerial duties.

Many medical offices and hospitals choosing to implement an EMR system are faced with a number of challenges during the EMR selection process. It’s difficult to know which system is best for your office without the right information, and EMR consulting services can help practices make the right choice in a number of ways.

These services have additional benefits for the EMR implementation process, however. Many medical staffers find themselves unsure of what exactly the EMR system does, what its features are, how to use them, and how to fix the equipment should problems arise. They also might need help selecting what kind of EMR servers, computers, tablets, laptops, and additional accessories they may need for their practice.

The services of an EMR consulting site  can help not only with the selection process but the actual implementation as well. Consultants can help with training clinical staff and physicians on the equipment, teaching them to troubleshoot errors, and can offer technical support if needed. Additionally, healthcare IT consultants are now extremely knowledgeable about meaningful use and stimulus reimbursements and should be able to help providers receive their incentive payments.

An EMR system is the next step toward and improved office and a better healthcare system, and having a consultant can help with more than the decision process.

With government funding for EMR implementation under the “meaningful use” stipulation already in full swing, EMR cost is becoming less of a concern for hospitals and doctors’ offices looking to incorporate an EMR system into their practice. However, for small or new practices (and even for some larger ones) EMR can be hard to finance without help. Stimulus payments offer reimbursement after the EMR system has been proven beneficial to the healthcare system, but acquiring the money to implement the system in the first place may require additional financing options. Additionally, rarely will stimulus payments cover the cost of EMR implementation.

The cost of an EMR system may vary. The different options available – including equipment such as EMR computers, servers, and accessories – can add to the costs of billing and installing/purchasing the system. Free EMR options exist, but they are financed by ads which many offices find unprofessional and irritating. Many practices find that their best option is to seek financing from a bank. This can help save on the interest costs invoked by other methods of financing, but many are unwilling to compromise their credit history should their practice find itself in financial trouble. Taking out a line-of-credit is an excellent option because it also offers low interest rates and no down payment, but many practices worry that the EMR will use up the entire line-of-credit and they will be unable to handle other expenses.

Each option has different advantages and disadvantages, and talking with financial experts or EMR consultants can help doctors make the right decisions. New EMR website EMRApproved.com offers financial consulting services and tools.

Integrating EMR software and medical devices is still an area of healthcare IT with a lot of weaknesses. There are not yet industry standards and finding the best infrastructure can be overwhelming. HIMSS Analytics released a paper in December 2010 stating that only a third of hospitals they surveyed reported having active interfaces between their EMRs and medical devices. It can be an obstacle course for healthcare organizations trying to make sure each medical device is compatible with their EMR.

However, healthcare providers must pay attention to EMR and medical device connectivity.  One of the core measures of Meaningful Use Stage 1 is the ability to interface vital sign monitors with EMRs. As of now, many organizations are transcribing vital signs first and then entering them into the EMR. This is not a paradigm of efficiency or accuracy.

When researching EMRs and medical devices, it is important to choose the medical device based on its quality and fit with your organization initially. Then talk to the EMR vendor about connectivity with the EMR software. EMR vendors should offer demos of the medical device/EMR interface capabilities and be able to recommend the best option for your organization.
